Experiencing the surface

Fantini Mosaici, in collaboration with AB+AC Architects, has unveiled a scented terrazzo. This unprecedented multi-sensory innovation infuses the traditional surface with natural essences, creating an immersive environment that engages sight, touch, and smell

Synesthesia, the neurological phenomenon where senses intertwine – allowing one to “see” a sound or “taste” a color – finds a remarkable new application in the world of design. What if a surface could be “breathed,” its essence perceived beyond just sight and touch? It’s this daring vision that underpins the latest groundbreaking project from Fantini Mosaici, developed in collaboration with AB+AC Architects: a scented terrazzo.

This initiative introduces an unprecedented, multi-sensory interpretation of terrazzo, one of Italy’s most iconic traditional surfaces. Now enriched with an olfactory component, it opens up unexplored possibilities in contemporary interior design. No longer merely a floor or wall covering, it becomes a living element, capable of interacting with its environment and its inhabitants.

Fantini Mosaici’s scented terrazzo marries renowned artisanal craftsmanship and exceptional chromatic research with a truly immersive experience. Through the controlled integration of selected natural essences – including the balsamic notes of eucalyptus, the mystical nuances of frankincense, and the depth of various woods – the surface slowly releases evocative fragrances. This process transforms any space into a dynamic environment, capable of stimulating olfactory memory and connecting with deep-seated emotions.

Crafted from a prestigious selection of polychrome marbles – such as Rosso Verona, Rosso Francia, Verde Ming, and Giallo Siena – the material fully retains the technical and compositional qualities of traditional Venetian terrazzo. To these, an unprecedented design dimension is now added, elevating the terrazzo to a true sensory protagonist. The result is a surface with a powerful visual and olfactory identity, ideally suited for contemporary projects demanding a high emotional impact.

Its applications span from luxury boutiques to wellness spas, from elegant hotel lobbies to exclusive private residences, or any experiential space where atmosphere plays a crucial role. From a sculptural wall to a monolithic fireplace, each application offers an opportunity to explore the intrinsic link between nature, architecture, and personal well-being.

This innovation further solidifies Fantini Mosaici’s standing in reinterpreting traditional materials. It opens up exciting new possibilities for luxury interior design and for an architecture that engages the senses comprehensively, extending far beyond mere form.
