Design as a Raison d’Être

From manufacturing hub to European creative center: Saint-Étienne Inaugurates the Galerie nationale du design, a milestone in a far-reaching project

June 10, 2026, marks a historic milestone for design culture: France has inaugurated the new Galerie Nationale du Design at the heart of Saint-Étienne’s Cité du Design. This institution, unique within the country, was conceived to showcase public collections through temporary exhibitions led by guest curators, offering a dynamic and collaborative exhibition model.

Far from an isolated development, the Gallery crowns the metamorphosis of the vast, late-19th-century Manufacture d’armes complex – a visionary urban regeneration project designed to establish an integrated hub for contemporary creation. This district hosts an entire ecosystem where premier educational institutions (such as the École Supérieure d’Art et Design, established here since 2009), laboratories, and exhibition spaces maintain a continuous dialogue.

As Éric Jourdan, Director General of the institution, notes, the opening of the Gallery enriches a creative quarter composed of complementary spaces of the highest architectural caliber, such as La Platine and La Cabane (both permanently open to the public as venues for exhibitions and talks), punctuated by major events like the Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Étienne, launched in 1998. Here, historic industrial structures merge with visually striking modern interventions, offering an ideal framework where design culture can be experienced, researched, and tested.

The connection between Saint-Étienne and design is rooted in its manufacturing past. Long renowned as the city of “arms, cycles, and ribbons,” it underwent immense industrial expansion in the first half of the 20th century, sustained by a coalfield that once counted 900 extraction pits.

This working-class, technical DNA forms the bedrock for the city’s transition into a 21st-century “Capital of Design” – a status cemented in 2010 by its admission into the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. Emulating the virtuous model of cities like Eindhoven, Saint-Étienne has successfully regenerated its industrial heritage, transforming former workshops into a hub of innovation. The prestigious design collection of the Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain de Saint-Étienne Métropole (MAMC+) – which comprises over 2,000 objects, including seminal works by Jean Prouvé and Charlotte Perriand – reflects this identity, bridging the celebration of everyday industrial design and auteur furniture.

Spanning over 1,000 square meters, the Galerie Nationale du Design holds no permanent collection; instead, it circulates works from France’s foremost museums, from the Centre Pompidou to the CNAP. In doing so, it offers constantly renewed perspectives. Rather than merely gathering objects within a historical-cultural context, the Gallery functions as a living platform for debate and analysis– open to change and experimentation – that invites the public into an open dialogue.

The exhibition chosen to inaugurate the Galerie is titled Design en main. Du design à l’objet/Design in Hand. From Language to Object (running until 07/03/2027). Curated by Laurence Mauderli, it offers a fascinating interplay between the language and the practice of design. Here, the hand – a nod to the site’s historical heritage as a Manufacture d’armes – becomes the symbol of craftsmanship, bridging the gap between tradition and continuous innovation.

Aurélie Voltz, Director of both the Gallery and the MAMC+, reflects on the birth of the new institution: “The creation of the Galerie nationale du design represents a milestone in the recognition of public collections in France. Conceived as a living space, it embodies a forward-looking vision of the 21st-century museum: an open environment designed not merely for observing objects, but for discussion, handling, and learning. It is a place where design is as much about experience as it is about observation, and where the public is invited to consider the impact of this discipline in shaping our lifestyles and our way of building society in the contemporary world.”
